The Chinese Lives of Uli Sigg, 2016 | Dir. Michael Schindhelm, Switzerland, 93 min.; German, English, and Mandarin, Hebrew subtitles
Introductory Lecture: Tamar Sofer, Head of Museum Programming
When Swiss businessman Uli Sigg first went to China, art was far from his mind. The year was 1979, and Sigg was working for the Schindler Escalator & Elevator Company. Since then, Sigg has established the world’s most significant collection of contemporary Chinese art — including works of internationally renowned artists such as Ai Weiwei, Shao Fan, Cao Fei, and others. Sigg championed the artists he admired, working tirelessly for their international recognition. Eventually, he became the Swiss ambassador to China, and a consultant on major Chinese art projects, including the construction of the Bird’s Nest stadium for the Olympic Games. This documentary presents Uli Sigg the entrepreneur, diplomat, and art collector in the tense sociopolitical context of China’s continual transformation since the 1970s.
