Bill Viola: The Road to St Paul’s, 2017 | Dir. Gerald Fox, UK, 101 min.; English with Hebrew Subtitles
Introductory lecture: Amit Shemma, Assistant Chief Curator
Bill Viola is renowned over the world over as a pioneer of video art. This moving film charts his career over twelve years, and follows him — and his wife and collaborator — as he creates his most high-profile commission to date: an immersive installation at St Paul’s Cathedral, London. Viola is not only respectful of the Renaissance tradition, he is steeped in it, and this film demonstrates that his work really can bear comparison with works by Michelangelo and others.
