Women's Month at the Museum / Peggy Guggenheim – The Most Famous Collector

A unique event dedicated to art collector Peggy Guggenheim, one of the most influential figures in modern art, and her significant contribution to the collection of the Tel Aviv Museum of Art.

A short lecture will be held at the event about the life and work of Peggy Guggenheim. A film will be screened, focusing on her significant contribution to the Museum and the broader context in which it was given. At the end of the screening, there will be a discussion with the film’s directors. Afterward, visitors will have the opportunity to explore the Museum’s modern collection exhibition independently, with special insights provided on selected works donated by her.

19:00 – Who Was Peggy Guggenheim?
Noa Rosenberg, Curator of the Modern Art Department
Peggy Guggenheim was a renowned American art collector who introduced the American abstract movement to Europe and supported numerous artists, including Jackson Pollock, Ben Nicholson, Yves Tanguy, and André Masson. In the early 1950s, she developed a friendship with Eugen Kolb, then director of the Tel Aviv Museum of Art. As a result, she donated 36 works from her collection to the Museum—an exceptional donation, as Guggenheim had not contributed to any institution outside the United States.

19:15 – Screening of the Short Film: Nothing But 34 Paintings
Directors: Ella Fainaro and Ziv Berkovich. 2022, 27 min.
In 1955, the Tel Aviv Museum of Art received a groundbreaking donation of contemporary artworks, featuring pieces by some of the most prominent artists of the time. Thousands flocked to the museum to witness this collection of abstract and surrealist masterpieces. But how did the museum’s director, Eugen Kolb, manage to secure such a revolutionary collection? What motivated Peggy Guggenheim, the most famous collector of her time, to accept his request and donate her largest contribution to a small, relatively unknown museum in Israel? Through letters exchanged between the two, this film explores their relationship and delves into these intriguing questions.
