Spite Your Face

Encounter at the exhibition Rachel Maclean: Spite Your Face (Hebrew)

Encounter with the assistant curator Galit Landau-Epstein

The exhibition by Scottish artist Rachel Maclean (b. 1987) is comprised of a video installation, at the heart of which is the film entitled Spite Your Face. The protagonist of the film is Pic, a young Pinocchio-like character, who climbs out of the gutter to the heights of society, enjoying the fruits of fame and fortune, until he inevitably sinks back into the place he came from. Pic paves his way up with lies, and his gilded Pinocchio nose, lengthens accordingly. The film is constructed as a bitter-sweet fable, grotesque and terrifying, about reality in the post-truth era, painted in colors of blue and gold. Aided by digital manipulation, the artist herself portrays all the characters with impressive virtuosity.
