The Museum and the Billionaire, 2017 | Dir. Olivier Lemaire, France, 54 minutes, French; Hebrew subtitles
Introduction: Ronili Lustig Steinmetz, Head of Exhibition and Collections Management
The magnificent building that was once the city’s longtime stock exchange is now another tourist attraction. François Pinault, one of France’s wealthiest men, bought the beautiful domed building to serve as the third museum to display his private art collection, and hired renowned Japanese architect Tadao Ando to design it. This film provides a fascinating glimpse into Ando’s work and an entertaining look at how the two communicate: one speaking Japanese, the other responding in French.
The film raises questions about how art has become the domain of the wealthy (even if this museum is open to the public) and the cost of such megalomaniacal projects—in this case, 3,000 people worked for five years to transform the building.
In collaboration with the EPOS Festival.
