Movie Night at Tel Aviv Museum of Art / By the Throat | Effi & Amir (2021)
The Museum is delighted to launch a new series of events linking its ongoing exhibitions with movies from Israel and abroad. Once a month, we will screen a movie relating to a prominent exhibition, preceded by an introductory lecture by either a curator of the exhibition or one of its featured artists.
The series program is linked to the exhibition program; we recommend visiting the exhibition before viewing the movie!
By the Throat | Effi & Amir (2021)
The invisible border between us passes through the throat - from there emerge the sounds that embed our native language and the pronunciation that was shaped in the place where we grew up, and they have become an auditory identity card that distinguishes us from others. From the time of the Book of Judges ("And they said to him, 'Say now Shibboleth.' And he said, 'Sibboleth,' for he could not pronounce it correctly. Then they seized him and slew him") to the present day, from the battlefields of the biblical era to the reception centers for asylum seekers in Europe, the sounds of our language are used to determine who is a friend and who is foe, who will open the door for us and whom we will leave outside. The film examines the science, technology, cultural biases, and politics behind the attempts to categorize us here and there, and wonders if this border is indeed clear and defined as it seems to us.
Preceded by a short lecture by curator of the exhibition, Adi Dahan.
We recommend visiting the exhibition “Mouthful” before watching the film.
