Guided tour at the exhibition Ronen Zien: Walking Into (in Hebrew)
Zien employs photography and video to examine the reliability of memory and the possibility of reconstructing it. Using green screen (or chroma-key) – a special effects technique from film and television that enables figures filmed against a green background to be embedded into different settings – he inserts himself into old photographs. Through this process, he explores questions about his familial and local identity. The Hill of Shouts on the Syrian-Israeli border (his home region) is the photographic and conceptual platform of these works.
Zien’s works unravel the dominance of photographic documentation, offering a poetic and deeply personal alternative for revisiting other places and times.
