Museum Town | Jennifer Trainer, USA, 2019, 76 minutes, English with Hebrew subtitles
Introduction: Shahar Molcho, Associate Curator
How did a small, God-forsaken town in Massachusetts become one of the most influential leading centers of art in the USA? Like many American towns, North Adams also saw the closure of its local factory in the early 1980s, and deteriorated to a chronicle of foretold unemployment and crime. When the local art college was looking for an exhibition space for large works of contemporary art, using the town’s deserted factory was suggested.
The film follows the building of the MASS MoCa museum and its development into a centre that now features exhibitions of the foremost contemporary artists. It focuses on the way in which building the Museum affected the local community’s life, and how it became a central part of its identity- all without compromising its vision or alienating its surroundings.
