The Powder & the Glory, 2007 | Dir. Ann Carol Grossman, Arnie Reisman, 86 minutes, English, English subtitles
Introduction: Galit Landau-Epstein, curator of The History of Beauty: Helena Rubinstein’s Miniature Rooms exhibition.
This film tells the story of two of America's first successful businesswomen—Helena Rubinstein and Elizabeth Arden. Immigrant women who started with nothing, they single-handedly built the beauty industry as we know it today. Despite living just blocks apart for over 50 years, they never met. Their fierce rivalry fueled their creativity, driving them to achieve unparalleled success in their respective domains. Their competitive brands shaped the beauty industry and, to a large extent, defined the image of the "new woman" of the 20th century.
At the start of their careers, makeup was primarily associated with actresses and sex workers, and the beauty business was dominated by men. They changed all of that, revolutionizing society in the process. This is an inspiring story of persistence, genuine creativity, and relentless innovation.
Before the screening, visitors are encouraged to explore the exhibition The History of Beauty: Helena Rubinstein’s Miniature Rooms.
