Film screening at the Museum / Close to Vermeer, 2023
Close to Vermeer (2023) | Director: Suzanne Raes
Netherlands 2023, 78 min, English, Dutch, and German; Hebrew and English subtitles
The screening on Friday, Nov. 3 at 11 am will be accompanied by an introduction by Ronili Lustig Steinmetz, Head of Exhibitions and Collections Management
When Gregor J. M. Weber first saw a painting by Vermeer as a child, he nearly fainted. Now, as curator of the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam, he is fulfilling a dream of many years: to present the most comprehensive exhibition ever of Vermeer’s works. Fewer than forty works have been identified with certainty as paintings produced by this seventeenth-century painter, and little is known about his personal life. Weber and a team of equally enthusiastic experts gathered these paintings from collections around the world. Just before millions of tourists descended on the exhibition, curators, restorers, historians, and collectors still argued passionately over which of the lesser-known paintings is authentic, and which deserves to be hung next to Girl with a Pearl Earring or The Milkmaid.
